Record high water discharge from the Birpur barrage on the Kosi river in Supaul and the Valmikinagar barrage on the Gandak river in West Champaran has raised serious flood concerns among officials and residents in 14 districts. The threat of floods is due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of rivers in North Bihar in Nepal, as well as in their own basins. Water discharge through the Birpur barrage increased from 4.80 lakh cusecs to 5.31 lakh cusecs, while the discharge through the Valmikinagar barrage rose from 3.84 lakh cusecs to 4.49 lakh cusecs. Bhagalpur and Katihar districts are expected to be the worst affected by the increased floodwaters. The Supaul district administration is urging residents between the Kosi embankments to move to higher ground. Officials have been put on high alert and instructed to monitor embankments closely, with leaves being cancelled. The water resources department predicts water discharge to reach 6.81 lakh cusecs by Saturday night through the Birpur barrage, approaching the record high of 7.25 lakh cusecs. Similar concerns exist for the Valmikinagar barrage. The 14 districts on high alert include Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, and Katihar.Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Saran, Vaishali, and Samastipur are experiencing flooding as the Gandak river overflows.
